Redact sensitive data in a PDF

Black out ID numbers, bank details, addresses or signatures before sending a document. Unlike a simple black box, the text underneath is really removed.

Your files stay on your device: no uploads, no sign-up.

How to redact a PDF

  1. Open the PDF: the Cover tool is already selected.
  2. Drag over the information you want to hide: it is covered with a black box.
  3. Press Save and download: “Make the cover permanent” is already on, so the covered pages become images and the text underneath is deleted.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn’t a black box enough?

In many programs a box drawn over text only hides it visually: whoever receives the file can still select and copy it. Here the covered pages are flattened, so the text no longer exists.

Can I still select the rest of the text?

The redacted pages become images. If you need searchable text, run OCR afterwards.
